William A. Middleswart, A Resident Of Warren County for More Than Sixty-Six Years, Passes Away At His Home.
William Abraham Middleswart, son of James and Lucy Middleswart, was born February 2, 1857, near Palmyra, Iowa, and died at his home March 8, 1923. He was sixty-six years, one month and six days old. When but three years of age, his parents moved to a farm south of Indianola. Here Mr. Middleswart has since lived. He was united in marriage to Hester Ann Alfrey in 1880. Ten children were born to them: a son who died in infancy and a daughter, Frances Mae, who died at the age of nineteen years; Benjamin F. of Upland, California; Mrs. Cora E. Bardick of Knoxville, Iowa; Mrs. Rachel C. Taylor of Ackworth, Iowa; Fay H. of Carlisle, Iowa; David A., Charles W., Joseph H. and Mrs. Ida Burris of Indianola, Iowa.
On December 17, 1920, Mr. Middleswart was stricken with paralysis; since which time he has been a constant though patient sufferer. A relapse came some six weeks ago. It was the prelude to the end. Despite careful medical attention and the constant and loving ministrations of his family, he became weaker. But as physical strength departed divine faith grew. He hopefully looked forward to meeting the ones who, he said, were waiting his coming. Kind and affectionate as husband, father, neighbor and friend, Mr. Middleswart will be greatly missed. His passing is a very real loss, for such men as he have helped to make our state and nation what it is by their faithful doing of the work given them. Besides the immediate family, he leaves to mourn their loss his brother, John of Northport, Nebraska; his sisters, Mrs. Mary E. Chumbley of Oconto, Nebraska; Mrs. Cornelia Cline of Valley Junction, Iowa; Mrs. Etta Shaver of Des Moines and Miss Rosa Middleswart of Indianola; also his many neighbors and friends. Rev. N. D. Gordon of Indianola conducted the funeral services at the home, Saturday at eleven a.m. Burial was at the Shaver Cemetery.
Card of Thanks – We thank all our neighbors and friends who so kindly assisted us by their presence and help and sympathy, during the sickness and death of our husband and father. Mrs. Hester Middleswart and family. [copied from a scrapbook at the Warren County Historical Society Library, Indianola, Iowa]
