John A. Cowie
(October 8, 1855 – April 23, 1923)

Last Saturday the community was again shocked by the sudden death of John Cowie. As usual he went to his work Saturday morning and had been assisting a car that was stuck in the mud, when he died in his wagon seat. Mr. Cowie had been sick the greater part of the winter but thought he was much improved in health and again took up his duties as patrolman on the road. He was a member of the Scotch Ridge church where the funeral was held Monday afternoon, conducted by his former pastor, Rev. Weingart. Mr. Cowie leaves to mourn his loss, his wife, one daughter, Mrs. Jacob Snyder, two sons, Walter and Arthur of Des Moines, besides sisters and one brother and many other relatives and friends. The remains were laid to rest in the Scotch Ridge Cemetery. The community extends their sympathy to the dear wife and children. John A. Cowie Victim of Heart Failure
John A. Cowie, aged seventy, and old time resident of Summerset, died on the seat of the wagon he was driving, Saturday, April 21st. Mr. Cowie who is patrolman on the Jefferson Highway north from Indianola, had just “hitched on” to a stalled bus belonging to the Frank Douglas bus line, which was mired down in a “mud hole” at the top of the hill on the south end of the new cut off west of Summerset on the Jefferson highway, but when the word was given to start the team it was found that Mr. Cowie had quietly and without a struggle passed away. Dr. Shaw who was a passenger on the bus pronounced it a case of heart failure. According to relatives Mr. Cowie had just recovered from an attack of pneumonia and had not entirely regained his strength.
