Oldest Odd Fellow In Warren County Dies
Silas Coryell, Civil War Veteran and Last Charter Member of Local Rebekah Lodge Dies Very Suddenly
The funeral services for Silas Coryell, who passed away Monday morning at one o’clock, after a brief illness, were held Tuesday morning at ten o’clock at his late residence, 401 West Boston Avenue, Rev. J. O. White Officiating. He had been a member of the local Baptist church for more than forty years, a member of the Odd Fellows for almost fifty-five years, and was also a member of the Grand Army of the Republic. When the call came in 1861, he enlisted in Co. B, Third Iowa Infantry, and served faithfully throughout the Civil War, being mustered out in 1864. On June 27th 1864, he was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth E. Renfro. No children were born to this union. Mrs. Coryell passed away on November 11, 1918. Silas Coryell, who was one of fifteen children, was born in the state of Ohio December 7th, 1836. He came to Iowa with his parents who located at Washington, when he was twelve years old, and died in this city April 9th, 1923, aged eighty-six years, four months and two days. Of the fourteen brothers and sisters in the family all have passed on, save one brother, Horace, of Wells, Nevada, and one sister, Ruth, who now lives in the state of Oregon.
