Paul Bartholomew
(January 12, 1892 – April 7, 1923)

Apostle Paul Bartholomew, son of W. N. and Mary B. Bartholomew, was born January 12th, 1892, at Palmyra, Iowa, and passed away at Murdo, South Dakota, April 7th, 1923, aged thirty-one years, two months and twenty-five days. At the age of seven years he came with his parents to Indianola, where he lived until 1916. He was united in marriage to Mayme Sutton on October 17th, 1914. He has resided in Des Moines since 1916 and during that time was employed as traveling salesman for Shapleigh hardware company of St. Louis. He was a member of the Chamber of Commerce and The Rod and Gun Club. His wife, his mother, five sisters, Leonora Igo, Viola Hiatt, Nelle Delaney, Lulu Schreiber and Camille Bartholomew, all of Indianola; two brothers, Arch of Omaha, and Walter of Salt Lake City, survive him. He also leaves numerous other relatives and a host of friends. He entered the retail hardware business with his father when a young boy and was engaged in this business until 1916. On April 2nd he left his home in Des Moines to attend a sale on his father’s ranch in South Dakota. His father having passed away December 1st, 1922, leaving his business interests in charge of Paul. His experience in the last few days of life exemplified his characteristic fidelity to tasks he undertook. As he journeyed, the malady of blood-poisoning rapidly developed. Considerations of personal convenience and safety would dictate the abandonment of the trip and submission of himself to a physician. He delayed, only long enough at one place to get temporary medical aid, then pushed on to his destination. He reckoned not with cost, so his duty was fulfilled. He made such notes of the sale as were important. Then when the work was done, he gave himself to the physicians care. He was taken to the hospital at Murdo, where his condition grew rapidly worse, until 1:00 o’clock the morning of April 7th, when he passed away, nine hours before his wife and sister, Nelle Delaney could reach him, they not being informed of his illness until Thursday evening, April 5th. The funeral services were held at the home of his mother at Indianola, Tuesday, April 10th, at 2:00 o’clock were conducted by Rev. Doctor E. M. Holmes, and were largely attended, not only by Indianola and Warren County people, but by a great many friends from out of town. Burial on family lot at Indianola. The many beautiful flowers were a mute tribute of the love and esteem in which he was held. The pall bearers were Lawrence Stone, Fred Steddom, Frank Laing, Tom Darnell, Earl Hoxel and Ezra Meredith.
