Mrs. Chloe Swearingen
Mrs. Chloe Swearingen died at the Methodist hospital in Des Moines, June 13, 1923, aged 72 years and 5 months. Interment was made in the Indianola Cemetery last Friday afternoon, June 14th. Chloe J. Johnson, second daughter of Rev. and Mrs. Silas Johnson, was born at Mt. Gilead, Ohio, January 13, 1851. In 1862 her parents moved to Oskaloosa, Iowa, and in 1867 to Indianola, where her father was pastor of the First Presbyterian Church for 12 years. She attended the public schools at Oskaloosa and was a graduate of the Rockford College of Rockford, Ill., and afterward taught for a time in that institution. In 1879 she went with the family to Leota, Iowa, where she was married to Artrim Swearingen. Her husband died in 1905 at Corpus Christi, Texas, to which place they had gone for the benefit of his health. For the past 13 years she had made her home with her brother, W. S. Johnson, at Newton, Iowa. Mrs. Swearingen united with the Presbyterian Church in her youth, and was all her life a consistent and active member. For many years she was church organist at Indianola and Leon, and more recently taught in the Sunday School. She leaves to mourn her loss three brothers, G. E. Johnson of Indianola, W. S. Johnson of Newton and Frank S. Johnson of San Jose, California. She also leaves six nephews and nieces. The body was brought to Indianola for burial, the funeral service, conducted by Rev. Thomas McGregor, was held at the home of her brother, G. E. Johnson, Thursday afternoon at 1:30.
