Minerva J. Hornaday
(March 19, 1837 – May 24, 1923)

Mrs. Minerva J. Hornaday
Again we are called upon to chronicle the passing of one of the older settlers of Warren County in the death of Mrs. Minerva J. Hornaday, at Sandyville, Iowa, on the evening of May 24, 1923, at the age of 86 years, 2 months and 5 days. The deceased was born in Indiana on March 19, 1837 and was the daughter of Veloris and Clarissa Butterfield. She belonged to a family of thirteen children and is survived by four of the family. In Indiana she was united in marriage to Michael C. Hornaday. To this union were born nine children, seven of whom survive her: Mrs. Joe Wilbur of Milo; Benton Hornaday, Charles Hornaday, and Mrs. Arlie Johns of Indianola; Mrs. Alfred Ford of Milo; Mrs. Walter Sandy of Elkhart; and Edd Hornaday of California.
Shortly after marriage Mr. and Mrs. Hornaday moved to Eddyville, Wapello County, Iowa, then to Knoxville, where they lived a few years, then to Warren county, where they lived the greater part of the time since, except a short time they spent in Missouri, where Mr. Hornaday died at Savannah, July 1888, and a short time in Des Moines. Mrs. Hornaday moved later back to her home in Sandyville where she has lived since. She leaves to mourn their loss seven children, twenty-eight grandchildren and twenty-eight great grandchildren, two sisters and two brothers, one of whom, Willia Butterfield resides at Palmyra, Iowa, besides a host of friends. Mrs. Hornaday united with the Christian Church when quite young and has been a faithful Christian since, being an active worker in the Sunday school and prayer meeting and all the services until failing health prevented her. The funeral was held at the Christian Church at Sandyville, Iowa, Sunday, May 27th, 1923, conducted by Rev. Harold G. Barr of Pleasantville, assisted by Rev. Lawson. Burial was at the Sandyville Cemetery. [copied from a scrapbook of newspaper clippings at the Warren County Historical Society Library, Indianola, Iowa]
