John W. Sams
(December 27, 1859 – May 15, 1923)

John William Sams was born near Chariton, Iowa, in 1859, and died at his home in Medora, Warren County, Iowa May 15, 1923, aged 63 years, 4 months and 18 days. He was the son of a family of seven children, born to Abraham and Julia Sams. He leaves to mourn his loss, his wife, six daughters, Mrs. Mabel Sacre, Mrs. Opal Duncan, Mrs. Ona Butler, Mrs. Vera Herald, and Mrs. Vena Weeks, all of Warren County, Iowa, and Mrs. Alta Labertew, in Colo., and two sons, Bert of Osceola, and Oral, of Liberty Center, also five brothers, Sam of Decatur City, Ia., Theodore of Kansas City, Thomas of Lawrence, Kansas, Bird and Ira of Hudson, Colo.
Those of his family who have preceded him in death are his parents, one sister, and one son, who died in infancy. At the age of seven John moved with his parents to Missouri, where he grew to manhood. In 1884 he was united in marriage to Rebecca Roe, and five years later he, with his family, moved to Warren County, Iowa, where he has resided until the time of his death. All his life was spent on the farm where he labored faithfully and industriously for the welfare of his family. He was known to be a kind father and a loving husband. His many friends know him to have been a charitable neighbor and a peace loving sympathetic friend. He stood for good citizenship and noble ideals of living moral virtues and benevolent movements receive his loyal support.
John Sams was converted in 1913 and united with the M.E. church of Medora at this time. He was a man of faith in the word of God, and a firm believer in the power of prayer. His family and friends mourn the loss of one whom they have learned to love, and whom they hope to meet in the great beyond, when the faithful followers of Jesus shall hear the “Well done” spoken by our Redeemer. The funeral services were conducted by the pastor Mr. Scheuermann Thursday at 10 a.m. Interment was made at Liberty Center. Those who were present from elsewhere are Mr. Theodor Sams of Kansas, Thomas Sams of Lawrence Kan., William Bacon and wife of Pleasantville, and Mr. and Mrs. Edward Roe and daughter of Milo.
