Amon L. Ogg
(May 4, 1837 – May 11, 1923)

Taps Sounded For Capt. A. L. Ogg
Was in 64 Engagements in Civil War and Charter Member of John Randolph Post
Amon L. Ogg, was born at Mt. Vernon, Ohio, May 4, 1837, and died at his home in Indianola, Iowa, May 11, 1923, aged 86 years and seven days. His parents emigrated from Ohio to Mt. Pleasant, Iowa in 1852. He was married to Miss Mary McCoy of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, March 10, 1859, and this happy union continued for 59 years, the beloved wife dying July 19, 1918. In 1869 Mr. Ogg and family moved to Warren County, Iowa where he engaged in farming until he moved to Indianola. For many years he was the local agent for the Hawkeye Insurance Company and was considered by that company as one of their most reliable and efficient agents. October 2, 1861 he enlisted in Co. D, 4th Iowa Cavalry and served his country during the entire period of the Civil War. He was in the Siege of Vicksburg and various other engagements numbering in all sixty-four, and is accredited in the history of his regiment. He was promoted to second lieutenant of his company as a reward for services well rendered. He was a charter member of James Randolph Post no. 116, G. A. R. of Indianola and was Commander of the Post for many years. His love for the G. A. R. and his comrades was so warm that several times during his illness he requested that the meeting of the Post be held at his house so that he could take part in its proceedings, and on these occasions he always took the place of the Commander, reciting the opening ceremonies from memory. Mr. Ogg was a life-long member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and, until confined to the house, was a faithful attendant upon all the services of the church and the duties assigned to him. He was the last survivor of his family. All through the many years of his sickness and afflictions his patience, sweetness of disposition and unwavering faith in God were an inspiration to all who were privileged to be near him, and this same spirit took him to the rest of his Heavenly Home.
Six children, Miss Nellie, Will and Mrs. Olive Sprague, of Indianola, Mrs. Fred Young, of Des Moines, Sam Ogg of Clairmore, Oklahoma, and Frank Ogg of Los Angeles, California, and a large host of friends remain to mourn his departure. Funeral services were held at the home last Sunday, May 13, at 2 o’clock in the afternoon, conducted by Revs. Fred Harris and W. E. Hamilton, D.D., in the presence of a large company of old friends and neighbors. Interment was made in the Indianola Cemetery.
