Benjamin F. Sanders
(March 3, 1843 – May 19, 1923)

Benjamin Franklin, son of James and Nancy Sanders, was born in Vermillion County, Indiana, March 3, 1843. He came with his parents to Iowa when a small child, settling near Vinton, Benton County. He was united in marriage June 14, 1866, to Miss Margaret Hite, and in the fall of 1866 they came to Carlisle, where they have since resided. He was of a family of six children, one brother, Coleman Sanders, still living at Portland, Oregon. He is also survived by his aged companion and three children, Mrs. Frema Lewis, and Edd and Bert, all of Carlisle. Also three grandchildren, Naomi and Emmett Lewis and Pauline Sanders. Soon after coming to Carlisle, he worked for a number of years in the flour mill then owned by Robert Nicholson. Later he became engaged in the mercantile business, where he remained for about 35 years, when, on account of poor health, he was compelled to retire, about four years ago. “Uncle Ben” as he was familiarly known, possessed many traits of character that won for him the admiration of many friends. His quiet, unassuming disposition, his kind and friendly manner, his thoughtfulness of others, his honest and upright dealing with his fellowmen, his interest in the welfare of his home church and community, made him a worthy citizen who will be missed. He has been a member of the Baptist church for the past forty-six years and was a teacher of the Men’s Bible class as long as his health permitted. Though he had been failing for some times, his last illness was of short duration, during which he suffered intensely until he peacefully fell asleep Saturday morning, May 19, 1923, at the age of 80 years, two months and 16 days. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the Baptist church, conducted by Rev. Edgar Thompson of Lorimor, after which the body was laid to rest in the Carlisle Cemetery.
