Lee H. Braucht Found Dead In His Buggy Early This Morning
Horse Stands All Night Awaiting Word From His Owner or Touch on the Reins
Lee H. Braucht of this city, well known throughout Warren County, was found sitting in his buggy dead at an early hour this morning at the gate of his farm in Clarke County near Old Liberty. Mr. Braucht was discovered by a passerby who notified neighbors of the condition. He had been to Osceola on Monday to pay his taxes and it is supposed that he died some time on the drive back to the farm. The horse had turned in as far as the gate, but had not gone through, although the gate was opened. How long he may have stood there is not known, but it is probable that he had been there all night. Mr. Braucht was sitting naturally in the buggy with one foot hanging out on the step as his friends had so often seen him ride. Coroner Webster of Clarke County took charge of the case. The remains were brought to the Proudfoot and Smith undertaking rooms here. Mr. Braucht was born in Warren County in 1864 and was only 58 years old at the time of his death. As this is written the report of the coroner has not been filed, but is supposed it will show death due to heart failure or apoplexy. Funeral arrangements have not been made owing to inability to get word to his son, Ferris, who is somewhere in Montana or Wyoming. Gerald Braucht of Sheridan, Wyo., is expected tomorrow and also Miss Aletha Braucht of Oklahoma. Besides these Mr. Braucht leaves his wife and daughter, Miss Zoe, who is at home. [Burial was in I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Indianola, Iowa]
LEE H. BRAUCHT
Lee H. Braucht, son of George and Susan Braucht was born in Squaw Township, Warren County, Iowa, August 8th, 1864 and passed away April 30, 1923, at the age of 58 years, eight months, and 22 days. He was united in marriage to Minnie Longfitt, of Dallas County, January 1, 1890. To this union five children were born; Roy Folsom, who died in infancy, Repha Rouine, Gerald Ashland, Ferris Wilson and Martella Zoe. At an early age he united with the Methodist church and continued in that faith until the time of his death. He used to go into a closet and return smiling, saying, “I have been talking to my friend, one we can all have if we only accept him.” He was a member of the Modern Woodman and of the Masonic order and tried to live up to the ideals set forth in Masonry. He was a most self sacrificing and indulgent husband and father and a good and kind neighbor, always ready and willing to help others in time of need. His entire life was spent in Warren County with the exception of about three years spent in Clarke County. On several occasions he made the remark to his family and friends that he wanted to die in the harness and that wish was fulfilled. Besides his wife and four children he is survived by one brother, George Braucht of New Virginia, Ia., three sisters, Mrs. Belle Gaddis of Alliance, Nebraska, Mrs. Marga Olive of Cartright, North Dakota, and Mrs. Dora Randolph of Indianola, Iowa, a number of other relatives and a host of friends.
