John L. Clevenger
(August 29, 1895 – October 3, 1938)

Obituary – John L. Clevenger
John L., son of John L. and Mary E. Stemen Clevenger, was born August 29, 1895, at Long Pine, Nebr., and passes away October 3, 1938, at his home near Portage, Wis. He attended the public schools at Lacona where he spent his boyhood days. He attended McKillipps Veterinarian College at Chicago, and then graduated from the Veterinarian College at Indianapolis, Ind. He served as a national guardsman of the Iowa First Cavalry on the Mexican border during the Mexican conflict before the World War. Then when the World War broke out he served as a veterinarian at Camp Sherman at Chillicothe, Ohio, until the close of the war. He was united in marriage to Josephine Nehls of Appleton, Wis., on Dec 26 1917. To this union were born five children; Mary Elizabeth, Eugene Clifton, John L. Jr., James Nehls and Patricia Joan. Besides his widow and children he is survived by seven brothers and two sisters. They are: Cecil C., Albert R., Herbert C., Mrs. Bert McPherson and Mrs. Bruce Ballard, all of Indianola; Eugene T. of Norwalk; Wilmer F. of Ladora; Cliff of Bryan, Ohio, and Floyd H. of Bowling Green, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, three brothers and one sister. In later years, after practicing his profession, he was promoted to the position of government inspector in different packing houses in Chicago and served there for a number of years. Later he was transferred to Des Moines where he served in the same capacity until May 1938, when he was transferred to the U. S. Department of Agriculture, his territory being at Portage, Wis. Funeral services were held Oct. 7, at Appleton, Wis, under the auspices of the American Legion. Interment was in the Appleton Cemetery. His brothers and sisters attended the funeral.
