Obituary – J. E. Brebner
John Edward Brebner, son of William and Croline Brebner, was born on December 9, 1861, at Farmington, Ill., and died at his home in Liberty Center on January 16, 1939, at the age of 77 years, one month and 7 days. He came to Warren County when a young man of 18 and lived in this county to the time of his death. He was married to Mary L. Coles on April 15, 1885, and to this union were born eight children, four sons and four daughters. They were Mrs. Carrie B. Reed, who passed away on January 11, 1916; and infant son, who was born and died on September 25, 1887; Mrs. Catherine Chumbley and Mrs. Mollie Sargent, both of Indianola; Charlie R., who died in Bordeaux, France, on July 12, 1918; Albert L. of Liberty Center; William E. of Des Moines, and Mrs. Florence Edgington of Liberty Center. At the death of his eldest daughter, he took into his home her 11-day-old daughter, Wilma Reed Sargent, whom he reared as his own child. He also leaves 14 grandchildren and one brother, Walter S. Brebner, of Farmington, Ill.
On account of failing health, he retired from the farm in 1924 and since that time lived at Liberty Center. He was a loving husband and father. He was strictly honest and upright in all his dealings, with his fellow men. As a friend and neighbor he was willing to lend a helping hand in time of need, in sickness and in trouble. He was a member of the I.O.O.F. lodge since 1881, held important positions in this lodge, and attended all meetings as long as his health permitted. He leaves to mourn his passing in addition to those mentioned his devoted wife who for 54 years shared his joys and sorrows, and a host of friends. His surviving children were all with him during his last illness and at the time of his death. Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Reed Kessler of Earlham on Thursday, January 19, 1939, at the Methodist church in Liberty Center. Interment was in the I.O.O.F. cemetery.
Card of Thanks – We wish to express our appreciation to our neighbors and friends for the many deeds of kindness and for all the lovely floral offerings during the illness and at the time of the death of their husband and father. – Mrs. Mary Brebner and family
