George Leroy Clapp
George LeRoy Clapp was born on March 21, 1859, and departed this life April 1, 1938, at the age of 79 years and 11 days. He was the youngest of seven children of Henry and Rebecca Clapp. He had three brothers, William Harvey and Nelson Clapp. Three sisters, Carlene, Mary Jane and Angeline all preceded him in death. His brother, William, was wounded at the battle of Shilo and died at Jacksonville, Miss. He had only two nieces, Lizzie Myers of Terera [Traer], Iowa, and Stella Holtz of Indianapolis, Ind.
When he was about one year of age his father passed away and his widowed mother reared the family. He was married to Martha Ellen Fridley December 18, 1878. To this union were born three daughters, Mrs. Gertie Bales of Milo, Iowa, Nettie Nine of Lucas, Iowa, and Eva Hupp of New Hartford, Iowa. There are 14 grandchildren and nineteen great grandchildren. Mr. and Mrs. Clapp had lived 60 years together. He had lived his entire life on the farm near Liberty Center, Warren County, Iowa. He was converted 35 years ago this July under the ministry of the Butchler Sisters, and united with the Friends Church. He remained true and faithful to his Lord through all his suffering, often expressing his readiness to meet his creator. His faithful wife and daughters were at his bedside when he peacefully passed away. His patient wife cared for him nearly five years and she rendered her most loyal service to him. He loved to visit with his neighbors and friends. He was a trustworthy citizen and honest in all his dealings and was ready to help anyone in time of need.
Funeral services were held at the Christian Neck church Monday, April 4, at 11 o’clock, conducted by the Rev. Evelyn McKinney of the Lacona Nazarene Church. Interment was in the Christian Neck Cemetery.
