William Walter Wittkowski
(June 24, 1923 - January 22, 2020)

William "Bill" Walter Wittkowski, 96, formerly of Avon Lake and Carlisle, passed away Wednesday, January 22, 2020, at MercyOne Hospice in Johnston, Iowa. A visitation will be held Monday, January 27, 2020 at Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, Des Moines, IA, from 10:00am-11:00am, followed by a private family service.

Bill was born on June 24, 1923, in Des Moines, IA to Hazel and William Wittkowski. After graduating from Lincoln High School, Bill trained with the US Merchant Marines as a radio operator and served as an ensign on ships in the Pacific and Middle East during WWII. While on leave in CA, Bill met the love of his life Opal Sanoden and they were married on January 31, 1946.

Bill's love of photography and nature provided him not only a career, but also a lifelong hobby. Bill was a photographer for Meredith Corporation for 37 years, retiring in 1985. In the infancy of Winnebago Industries, Bill provided photographic work for Winnebago with the added bonus of many fun vacations for the family in the latest model of trailer or motorhome. Bill was a longtime member of Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd. He also proudly served his community through various volunteer activities that included serving on the Carlisle Community School Board and the Carlisle Public Library Board.Bill was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and along with Opal created a loving happy home. Bill and Opal's marriage of 72 years was a beautiful example of unconditional love.
Bill is survived by his children; Bill (Teri) Wittkowski of Eldridge, Wynelle (Scott) Lindsley of Marion, Wendlyn (Tim) Haight of Johnston, and Deborah (Jan) Beaudway of Hudson, WI; 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife Opal, his parents, and his brother Bob.
Memorials may be directed to Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 3820 SW 9th St., Des Moines or Carlisle Public Library, 135 School St., Carlisle.
