(November 20, 1836 – August 7, 1923)

Mrs. Caroline Hopper
Caroline, daughter of Jesse and Nancy Elliott, was born near Oquowka, Henderson County, Illinois, on November 20, 1836, being the second of ten children. On January 31, 1856, she was married to John Wesley Hopper, of Hopper’s Mills, Illinois. In 1880 she moved with her family to a farm near Emerson, where they remained until 1889, then came to Indianola where they have lived nearly thirty-four years. She passed away at her home in Indianola on Tuesday, August 7, 1923, at 3 p.m., at the age of 86 years, 8 months and 18 days, after several months illness. Her husband and three children preceded her to the other world. One son, Harry E. Hopper, of Indianola, and two daughters, Mrs. Eugene McFadon, of Emerson, and Miss Donzella Hopper, of Indianola, survive her. She has one surviving sister, Mrs. Anna Wertz, of Burlington.
Very early in life she became a member of the Methodist Episcopal church. Her funeral was held from the home Thursday afternoon at three o’clock, conducted by her pastor. [Copied from a scrapbook of obituaries at the Warren County Historical Society Library, Indianola, Iowa]
