Woman Dies When Truck Strikes Car
4 Others Injured Near Indianola
Indianola, Iowa, Jan 8, 1938
Mrs. Bert Miller, 42, of Indianola, was killed about 5:30 p.m. Saturday when a transport truck struck the auto in which she was riding on a bridge 10 miles southeast of here on Highway 65. Four others were injured. Mrs. Miller’s husband, who was driving, was taken unconscious to Iowa Methodist hospital in Des Moines. At first believed critically injured, Miller was found upon examination to have suffered only a broken nose and face bruises.
Suffer Cuts
In the truck were Edwin and Frank Gentry of Kansas City, Mo., who were bringing a load from there to Ames, Ia. Edwin, the driver, was badly cut about the head. Frank suffered less severe cuts. The latter said that the truck was going north with the Miller car just ahead and traveling the same direction. Apparently the Miller car struck the bridge rail and then was struck from the rear by the truck.
Daughter in Car
With the Millers was the dead woman’s daughter by a previous marriage, Gloria Bristol, 10. She was only slightly hurt. The Millers operated a café here. They had been married only four weeks. Formerly Mrs. Miller lived in Des Moines. Miller’s brother, Harry Mitchell, night Marshall here, was one of the officers who took him to the Des Moines hospital.
[Both Minnie and Bert Miller (1881-1960) are buried in Liberty Center Cemetery, Liberty Township, Warren County, Iowa]
