Mary Ann Webb
(July 1, 1839 - February 24, 1923)

OBITUARY
Mrs. Mary Ann (Smith) Webb was born in Cochocton County, Ohio, July 1st, 1839 and died at the home of her cousin, Mrs. H. T. Manson, Quasqueton, Iowa, February 24th, 1923. She moved with her parents to Iowa in 1856 and was united in marriage to Albert A. Webb January 1st, 1861; two children came to bless the union, one having died in infancy, the other is Dr. M. Sula Webb of El Paso, Texas. The family made their home on a farm near Greenbush, Iowa, till the husband's death, which occurred November 2nd, 1898. Soon after this she joined her daughter Sula at Cedar Rapids, Iowa. When a young woman she was converted and united with the Methodist Episcopal church at Greenbush. When the railroad came through and the town and church began to feel the pull toward Spring Hill, she became one of the charter members of the new Methodist church in that place. She was a faithful member and constant worker in the church all her life, having served as superintendent of the Sunday school for a number of years; and she went, not by Ford, but to and fro along the foot-path that leads from her home to the church, so `tis said by those who recall her active days, she went year after year to serve her Lord and the community in many ways. She had a number of years teaching in the public schools to her credit before her marriage, and when Bishop Vincent's Chautauqua became the thing in the country, she entered and graduated from the four years course of study. She has one sister, Mrs. Hattie A. Nickle, Cumming, Iowa, and a brother., the Rev. Dr. William Christie Smith, of Indianola, living. While on a visit at her cousin's home she was stricken down on June 3rd, 1920, remaining helpless and bedfast till her death. She received the tenderest care at the hands of the Mansons to the very end. A short funeral service was held at their home by the pastor of the Quasquiten church, Rev. J. Priestly before the body was shipped to Des Moines where it was taken to the Linn Grove Methodist church for the home service which was conducted by the pastor of the Spring Hill Methodist church, Rev. James Walls, February 27th, at 2:30. A large number of her friends gathered to pay their last respects to a much loved and highly honored woman. She sleeps at the side of her husband in the Linn Grove cemetery. "Precious in the eyes of the Lord is the death of his saints."
