Memorial services for Dee Ann Allen, 72, who passed away Thursday, June 14, 2018 at Taylor House Hospice, Des Moines, will be held 11:00 a.m., Monday, June 25 at First United Methodist Church in Indianola.
Dee was born on June 26, 1945. She met her husband, James Eugene Allen while they were both working at the Women’s Reformatory in Rockwell City, Iowa. They married in 1967 and moved to Indianola.
Dee received her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1972 from Simpson College; she received her Master of Science in Education degree from Drake University in 1980. She attended college while raising her four children; Gwen, Peggy, Jason and Beth. Dee had a 30 year career in education. She serviced the Indianola Community School District in her various roles as teacher, chief negotiator, and principal.
Dee received her private and commercial pilots licenses and Lighter- Than- Air certificate. She owned and operated her hot air balloon “L’amour” for over five years and served as membership chair for the Balloon Federation of America. A ballooning highlight was flying the Governor of Iowa, Robert Ray. After retirement she worked at Taylor’s Floral and Gifts for ten years.
Dee is survived by her husband, James Eugene Allen; children, Gwen (Randy) Goben, Peggy (Rick) Anderson, Jason Allen and Beth Cross; grandchildren, Melissa (Benjamin) Gibney, Justin Goben, Kindra (Jason) Elder, Casey (Meredith) Goben, Emily Cross (Matthew Liber), and Adam Cross; great- grandchildren, Connor and Bailey Kennedy and Austin Elder; mother, Dorothy Vettel; and brother Dennis (Leola) Goodwin. Visitation will be held 5-8 p.m., Sunday, June 24 at Overton Funeral Home, Indianola.
