Obituary
DIED – On Sunday morning, Feb. 19, 1881, at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Strong, in Pottawattamie County, Mr. Amos Barker, aged 88 years, 7 months and five days. Father Barker was born in Sanderfield, Massachusetts, in Sept. 1793, and when about twelve years old he removed to Ohio and then to Jefferson County, Iowa in 1845. Finally in 1848 he settled in Warren County, being among its earliest settlers. He was married in 1814 to Miss Nancy Russell who died a little over five years since. Mr. Barker had been a professing Christian for over 70 years first of the Free Will Baptist church, but after coming to Indianola he connected himself with the M. E. church, of which he remained a member up to the time of his death. He was a soldier in the war of 1812, being about one year in active service. Mr. B. spent much of his time with his son here in Indianola, and will be remembered by all as a man of most cheerful disposition and who always had a kind word for everyone. He retained his mental powers to a remarkable degree for one of his age. But slowly his strong physical system gave way until at last he was gathered unto his fathers. [Amos Barker is buried in the IOOF Cemetery in Indianola, Iowa along with his wife, Nancy Barker (1792-1876).]
