Catherine Fetters
(January 3, 1788 – August 3, 1886)Advocate Tribune, Indianola, IA, Thurs., August 12, 1886, p.2, col.3
It is seldom that newspapers are called upon to chronicle the death of a person of such advanced age as Mrs. Catherine Fetters, she having been born January 3rd, 1788, in Ashtabula County, Ohio. In 1908 she was wedded to Michael Fetters in Pennsylvania with whom she lived until his death in 1833, bearing him four sons and three daughters, of the four sons Samuel, Michael and Henry still live, and are very respected citizens living in this vicinity, the daughters but one survives the aged mother, and she is the wife of Mr. Dolby. It was at the home of this daughter that Mrs. Fetters was permitted to lay down the mantle of life which she had worn for 98 years and six months, breathing last on August 3rd, 1886. She never re-married but remained among her children to bless them longer than is the lot of many. Her mind was fairly active until about a year and a half ago since which time she has continued to fail. The events that have crowded themselves into her life would make an interesting volume, being born about eleven years after the Declaration of Independence was promulgated. She has seen this nation rise from weakness to strength, having lived during the reign of nearly every President. Her children, grand children, great grand children and great great grandchildren numbered one hundred and sixty-six.
