William John Brentano
Bill Brentano, 98, of Indianola, Iowa, formerly of St. Marys, Iowa, passed away on September 19, 2016, at the Altoona Rehabilitation and Nursing Home. Visitation will be at St. Marys, Iowa Church Hall on Friday, September 23, 2016 beginning at 5:00 P. M. with rosary being said at 7:00 P.M. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Immaculate Conception Church in St. Marys on Saturday, September 24, 2016 at 10:00 A.M., with burial to follow at the St. Marys cemetery.
Bill was born in Denton, Kansas to William and Clara Brentano on February 13, 1918. At the age of 12 he moved to St. Marys, Iowa where in 1938 he married Marie McNeer. Bill and Marie, who were married for 75 years, raised their family and lived most of their lives in St. Marys. Bill was a lifetime member of the St. Marys Knights of Columbus and a founding member of the St. Marys Rod and Gun Club. Bill enjoyed all sports, played Town Team baseball and coached Little League baseball. Prior to his first retirement, Bill sold sporting goods to high schools and colleges for Vic Young Sporting Goods and Hopkins Sporting Goods. In anticipation of his retirement, Bill expanded his then small apple orchard in St. Marys to 600 apple trees so “he would have something to do after retirement”. Bill sold apples and apple cider to customers all over central Iowa and as far away as Missouri. When he retired from the apple orchard, Bill and Marie moved to Indianola. Still needing something to do, Bill worked as a greeter at Walmart until he was 92 when he retired for a third time.
Bill is survived by his children, Colleen Morrow, Wilma Jean Brentano and William M. Brentano (Ellen MacRoy), and daughter-in-law Tammy Brentano Daniel, 11 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, 7 great-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Bill was preceded in death by his wife Marie, his parents, brothers Bernard and Paul, sister Eileen Mangold, son Jeffery, and grandson Steven Wilbur. This memorial is provided by Peterson Funeral Services, 415 School St., Carlisle, Iowa, www.petersonfuneralservices.com
