(July 16, 1951 - November 22, 2016)

Pete Wilgenbusch, 65, passed away at his home in St. Marys on Tuesday, November 22, 2016. Pete lived his entire life in the St. Marys area where he farmed and drove school buses for both I-35 and MSTM for 45 years. He served nine years as an Air National Guard medic and 18 years as an EMT and Captain of the St. Marys Fire and Rescue Department where he helped start the ambulance service. For certain, he was happiest when he was helping others in any capacity, driving bus, and by simply enjoying his family and friends, especially teaching his grandkids how to ‘Live Large’. There can be no count to the number of friends he had or the number of trees he planted over the years.
In 2008, Pete received new lungs and almost nine additional miracle years through the loving generosity of Erin Schoenhard and her family, which became our family. Pete stated many times, ‘their darkest day was my best day’.
Pete is survived by his wife Shirley of nearly 46 years; his daughter Amy (Doug) McCasland, Shelby and Sydney; his son Joe (Heather) Wilgenbusch, Lucas and Lane and his best companion, Lady.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, November 27, 2016 from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Peterson Funeral Home, 602 East Salem Avenue, Indianola, IA. No funeral is planned at this time and ashes will be interred at a later date. Memorials may be given to the St. Marys Fire and Rescue Department, Iowa Donor Network, or a tree could be planted in his name.
