Grace Penick, 84, passed away Thursday, April 20, 2006 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Richardson Funeral Home in Carlisle, with burial following at Scotch Ridge Cemetery. Grace was born February 9, 1922 in rural Polk County and lived in Carlisle for more than 55 years. She was a homemaker and retired cook for the Carlisle Community Schools. She enjoyed her flower gardens, attending her grandchildren's activities and running errands with her best friend, Evelyn. She is survived by her four children, Jim (Joyce) Penick of Carlisle, Eva Gill of West Des Moines, Sharon (Jan) Saunders of Des Moines and Dennis Penick of Des Moines; eight grandchildren, Mike Penick, Les Penick, Jeff Comstock, Deanna Comstock, Marc Comstock, Robin Saunders-Jack, Brian Saunders and Micah Penick- Henry; nine great-grandchildren; sisters, Freda James and Mabel Douglas of Des Moines; brother, Loyal Thomas of Deland, FL; and many nieces and nephews. Grace was preceded in death by Owen, her husband of 57 years; brother, John Thomas; and sisters, Ida Downs and Rosemany Burkhead. Friends may call after 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home, where family will be present from 4 to 6 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Carlisle Dollars for Scholars.
