Vernon Eugene Shipley, 94, a long-time resident of Carlisle, passed on April 3rd, 2016 at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines. Vernon was born Nov. 15, 1921, in Minburn, Iowa, to Claude and Lillian Shipley. The oldest son, he grew up with three brothers; Harold, and twins Dean and Dale and a younger sister, Melba. Vernon graduated from Perry High School in 1939 before joining the Navy in 1942. He served in World War II as a medical corpsman on a sub-chaser. At one time, all four brothers were fighting in the war. Fate brought Vernon and wife Opal together at a softball game. They were married on Aug. 23, 1947. The couple had resided in Perry, Fraser, South Des Moines and Carlisle, all in Iowa. In his early years, Vernon worked as a railroad mechanic in Fraser, IA. He worked and retired from Frye Copy Systems Co. in Des Moines, IA, as a machinist and supervisor. Vernon's duties there included setting up machine shops in the company's worldwide holdings. Throughout his life, Vernon enjoyed playing cards with family and friends, fishing at Frye camp, attending his grandchildren's ball games, and spending winters in Donna, Texas, where he enjoyed musical jam sessions and bingo games. Vernon is survived by his wife of 68 years Opal E. Shipley of Des Moines; daughter, Ronda Fiser (Dean) of Carlisle; son, Gene Shipley (Terrie) of Carlisle; daughter, Leigh Carr (Scott) of West Des Moines; son Steve Shipley (Kerri) of Lake City; brother Harold Shipley (Leota) of Westminister, Colo.; brother, Dale Shipley of Perry; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Vernon was preceded in death by his parents Claude and Lillian Shipley of Perry; his brother, Dean Shipley of Glenwood, Ia. and sister Melba Derry of Rippey, Ia. In lieu of flowers, a memorial may be made to: Carlisle High School Baseball. Funeral Services will be held 11:00 a.m., Friday, April 8, 2016 at Peterson Funeral Home in Carlisle. Interment will be in the Carlisle City Cemetery. Public visitation for Vernon will be from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the Funeral Home.
