Nioma Gaston, 102, of Carlisle, passed away Sunday, Jan. 25, 2015, at the Carlisle Assisted Living Center. A memorial graveside service for Nioma will be held at the Avon Cemetery on Saturday, Feb. 7, 2015, at 11 a.m. with a lunch to follow at Peterson's Funeral Home in Carlisle.
Nioma was born November 21, 1912, in New Rockford, N.D., to Carlton Johnston and Minnie Witt Johnston and was a graduate of East Grand Forks High School. Nioma lived in Carlisle for the last 63 years and was a member of the Carlisle United Methodist Church, and was a member and past president of the Women's Circle, American Legion Auxiliary, and was a 50+ years member of the Rebekah Lodge. Nioma is survived by her children: Robert (Patricia) Gaston of Des Moines, Richard (Sue) Gaston of Huntington Beach, Calif., Carol (Marvin) Conant of Carlisle, Judy (Arturo) Sungo of Indianola, Shirley (Stan) Dalby of Indianola; siblings: Stanley Johnston of Minnesota and Nadine Dickerson of Richmond, Va.; 14 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Nioma was preceded in death by her husband Stanley, her son Marton (Sonny), her parents Carlton and Minnie, siblings; Florence Earl, Blanch Lealos, Carlton Johnston, Eugene Johnston, Joyce Dickerson, Phyllis Johnston, Dewey Johnston, JC Johnston, Clarence Johnston and Jim Johnston.
