Doris Marie Ellis, 77, passed away on Tuesday, April 24, 2012 at Bright Kavanagh House surrounded by family. Doris was born in Afton, Iowa to Lee and Edith Conklin on September 14, 1934. She attended school in Creston through the 8th grade and then East High School is Des Moines. She worked at Northwestern Bell in Des Moines until becoming disabled in 1979. She was married to Dwight Ellis on February 11, 1956. They lived in Des Moines and Carlisle and have lived in the Valley View Village community for the past two years. She loved to read and especially loved bible research and study. She was a member of PEO Chapter NT in Carlisle and volunteered with Church Women United and Hospice of Central Iowa. Doris was a loving wife, mother of four, Nana of ten and Great Nana of seven. She loved her family with all of her heart and always made each one of them feel special. She lived her faith every day and loved unconditionally. She was a member of Carlisle United Methodist Church. Doris is survived by her husband, Dwight L. Ellis; daughters, Robin Gurwell of Carlisle and Kelly Wernli (Matt) of Altoona, sons, Tim Ellis (Gay) of Marthasville, Missouri and Alan Ellis (Karen) of Johnston, Iowa; her two brothers, Larry Conklin (Kathy Slorah) and Ronald Conklin; ten grandchildren, Adam Wernli (Ashlie), Erin Gurwell, Nick Gurwell (Crystal), Josh Ellis, Jenna Wernli, Faith Gurwell, Joel Ellis, Jonathan Ellis, Breanna Ellis and Mackenzie Ellis; and seven great grandchildren, Gwenivere, Aydon, Keegan, Maleah, Lauren, Piper and Lleyton and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, April 27, 2012 at Carlisle United Methodist Church, 405 School St., Carlisle followed by burial at Carlisle Cemetery. Visitation will be held 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday at Carlisle United Methodist Church. Memorial contributions may be directed to Hospice of Central Iowa or the Carlisle United Methodist Church.
