Mary Hitchcock Perkins
(March 16, 1835 - February 3, 1899)

Advocate Tribune, Indianola, Iowa, Thurs., Feb 9, 1899, p.3
Many hearts have been made sad by the death of Mrs. Mary Hitchcock Perkins, which occurred Feb 3, 1899, at her home 6 miles west of Indianola. She was born in Nelson, Ohio, March 16, 1835, came with her parents to Danville, Iowa, in 1839 and was married to Mr. Oliver Perkins Oct 21, 1858, with whom she lived a most happy and useful life. She reared a son and two daughters. One of the daughters crossed over the river at the age of fourteen many years ago. The son and the other daughter, Mrs. Floyd, are left to mourn the loss of their devoted and loving mother. Mrs. Perkins and family came to Warren County, Iowa, in 1868, and resided at the home place 6 miles west of Indianola until her departure to be with her Savior and her dear ones on the other shore, her husband having preceded her some seven years ago. She became a humble follower of the meek and lowly Jesus at the age of seventeen and has ever been a devoted and consecrated Christian of the most exemplary living, cheerfully resigned to her Lord’s will in all things. She has been a consistent and an honored member of the First Presbyterian church of Indianola for over a quarter of a century. Her physician in calling upon her, was so surprised at her cheerfulness that he asked her, “Do you know how dangerously sick you are?” “Certainly doctor, I know it.” Indeed she could cheerfully say, “Thy will be done.” Faithful unto the end, she has gone to Him who has promised, “Unto them that are faithful unto death will I give a crown of life.” “Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord, yea, saith the spirit, and their works do follow them.” “Asleep in Jesus blessed sleep, from which none ever wake to weep. A calm and undisturbed repose, unbroken by the last of foes.” The funeral rites were conducted by the pastor of her church Feb 5, 1899, at 10 a.m. at the residence in the presence of a throng of sympathizing friends and relatives. Her body sleeps in the Indianola cemetery until the summons of the Resurrection morn. H.
