Obituary
Leonidas, son of Elisha M. and Sarah Roy was born in Louden County, Virginia on Jan 10th, 1831 and departed this life at his home in New Virginia, Iowa on Jan 18th, 1920, aged 89 years, 8 days. He was married to Cordelia Thompson, sixty three years ago. For 9 years they made their home in Virginia, coming to Iowa in March 1865, settling in Virginia Township, Warren County. 14 children were born to this union, two dying in infancy and Richard on Jan. 17th 1880 at the age of 15 years. The 11 living children are Mrs. Warren Reed, Osceola, Iowa, Tom J. New Va., Emma V., Orange, Calif., E. J. of Los Angeles, Calif., Loma, Council Bluffs, Ia., Wm. J. of Portland, Ore., John W. Oakland, Ia., Ceddie W. Chicago, Ill., Pearl R., Claude C., and Lee S., Des Moines, Ia. All his children were with him when he passed away but Emma, E. J., and Wm. J. also two grandchildren, Ernie Reed, New Va., and Bessie Stickler, Osceola, Ia. For 20 years Mr. Roy was in the Produce business in Osceola, associated with Mr. Hold and Mr. John W. Hall, the family remaining on the farm, northwest of New Va. Mr. Roy sold his business in Osceola and with his family moved to New Va. In 1891. He leaves his companion of 84 years, the 11 children mentioned, 30 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. “Uncle Lee” as he was called by all was held in high esteem by friends and neighbors and will be greatly missed in the community where he lived so long. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon. After a short service at the home conducted by Rev. Isaac Thomas, the body was taken to the M. E. Church where services were held by Rev. Carder, and the body laid to rest in the New Va. Cemetery. Services at the grave conducted by the Masons of which he was a member.
