(April 3, 1833 - February 17, 1915)The Advocate-Tribune, Indianola, Iowa, Thurs. Feb 25, 1915, p.6
Mrs. Susan Swearingen Clark
Susan Swearingen, was born in Kentucky, April 3rd, 1833. She was the sixth child of Charles and Harriet Swearingen of a family of six sisters and three brothers. In early life she came with her parents to Bloomington, Indiana. She was united in marriage to the late William J. Clark, September 25th 1854. To this union were born six children: Harriet Julia, Tirza Emma, William Mawxell, who died in infancy; Charles David, who passed away one year ago; Nellie C. and Franchon C. In the spring of 1857, they removed to Indianola, Iowa, where she has since resided.
To know her was to love her. Her husband, children, home, and the church came before everything else; nothing was too hard; no sacrifice too great, where it concerned her loved ones. She was a loving wife and mother in every true sense of the word; a most kind and gentle neighbor, always kind and obliging and ready to lend a helping hand in sickness and distress. She was active and faithful in Christian work, performing cheerfully and well whatever her hands found to do in the Master’s service. She was a member of the United Presbyterian church, and together with her husband had been identified with the Indianola congregation, ever since its first organization in 1857. In her death the congregation sustains a loss which is keenly felt. She was a mother in Israel.
Two daughters, Mrs. John M. Calhoun and Mrs. Frank H. McClure; two grand-daughters, Mrs. Hugh G. Van Pelt of Waterloo, and Miss Carrie Calhoun of this city, and one grand-son, W. S. Clark of Indianola, survive her. She passed away Wednesday evening, February 17th, 1915, in the eighty-second year of her age. The funeral service was held Thursday afternoon at 2:00 o’clock from the home, and was conducted by her pastor, Rev. J. S. Wilson, pastor of the United Presbyterian church.
