Advocate-Tribune, Indianola, IA, Thurs., Jan 8, 1920, p.6
Obituary – Mrs. D. C. Brand
Louisa, daughter of Eli and Evaline Ranney, was born in Oneida county, N.Y., August 21, 1831. She departed this life at her home near Spring Hill, Iowa, December 25, 1919, at the age of eighty-eight years, four months and four days. In 1844, when but a child, she removed with her parents to Cattaraugus county, N.Y.. Here she grew to young womanhood. She chose to become a tailoress and learned her trade in Perrysburg, N.Y.. At Dayton, N.Y., in 1851, she was married to Dewitt C. Brand, with whom she spent fifty-six years of happy wedded life, her companion being called away in March 1906. She was the mother of nine children, seven of whom survive her, two having preceded her to the better land, Delinda, who died in infancy, and Carrie, who was laid to rest in the Indianola cemetery less than two months before her. The esteem in which she was held by her children is summed up in the words of a daughter, written to her only a few days before her going; “I thank God he chose this one woman in all the world to be my mother.” Many gifts of flowers, fruits, kindly thoughts, and friendly calls testify to the esteem in which she was held by neighbors and friends. Those who remain to mourn her loss are, one sister, Mrs. Helen Kennedy, of Cumming, Iowa; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Adie Ranney, of Perrysburg, N. Y.; five daughters, Mrs. Alice Brown, of Atlantic, Iowa; Mrs. Sarah Lehman, of Cumberland, Iowa; Mrs. Will Perverley, of Keneseo, Kansas; Mrs. Will Comer, of Massena, Iowa; Mrs. Nellie Lundy, of Maxwell, Iowa; and two sons, George C. and Warren D., both of Indianola. “For death is not a break nor end of thought and action, but the change of rising into loftier range, where thoughts to nobler issues tend.” The funeral services were held at the home on Sunday, December 28th, conducted by Rev. E. J. Zumsteg, pastor of the Spring Hill Methodist church. Interment in Indianola cemetery.
