Obituary – Mrs. S. W. Monroe
Mrs. Elizabeth Monroe, daughter of Anthony and Keziah Arnold, was born August 27, 1847, in Ohio, and died at Wick, Iowa, December 19, 1920, aged seventy-two years, three months and twenty-two days. She was married to Samuel W. Monroe January 30, 1872, and to them were born nine children, five sons and four daughters, one son and one daughter dying in early life. The sons, Oscar, Earl, Pearl and Wick, and daughters, Mrs. Vilda K. Campbell, Mrs. Icie S. Bell, all of Wick, and Mrs. Jennie Dunn, of Martensdale, Iowa, with their father a left to mourn their loss. When about twelve years old she was converted and united with the Methodist Episcopal church of which she lived a faithful and devoted member till her death and coronation and during her long and painful sickness nothing seemed to give her so much pleasure as to have her neighbors and her children come in to her sick room for a service of prayer and song, and the prayers she offered when not able to raise her head from her pillow will long be remembered by those who were there. She was a true companion, a loving and faithful mother, a kind and charitable neighbor, always ready with open hands and a warm heart to assist in all times of need. With supreme confidence in her Savior she came to her grave in a full age, like as a shock of corn cometh in his season, and the words of the poet well describe her end. Servant of God, well done, the glorious warfare passed, the battle fought, the victory won, and thou art crowned at last. The funeral services at the Methodist Episcopal church in Wick were conducted by her old pastor, Rev. M. Harned, of Des Moines. Rev. S. W. Lee, of Wick, took part in the services. The burial was at the Wallace cemetery, near Wick.
