Amanda Cunningham
(Oct17, 1842 - Dec 30, 1922)

Advocate Tribune, Indianola, Iowa, Jan 4, 1923, p.3
Mrs. Amanda Cunningham
Amanda Swain, daughter of Moses and Maria Swain, was born in Indiana, October 17, 1842, and was one of a family of four children. She was united in marriage to Geo. W. Cunningham on January 16, 1862, and for forty-five years they lived and worked together as true companions until the husband passed away on into the better land fourteen years ago. They were the parents of eight children; Isaac Elbert, who went to his reward last January, Mary Ida, at age of fourteen, Lela Murdock died ten years ago, and James Claude died at the age of five. She is survived by four children: William Arthur, Emporea, Kansas; Minnie M. Young, and Nora F. Crabb of Indianola, and George Alva of Lucas, besides nineteen grand children and twenty-one great grandchildren and other relatives and a host of friends.
She was truly a mother of Israel, being converted in early life and in all earnestness and simplicity living a devoted Christian all her days and was a member of the Christian Union church of Milo. She was a patient sufferer for many years, particularly for the past fourteen years when that dread disease, cancer, developed and was the immediate cause of her death.
She left her quiet testimony out of the midst of suffering that she was trusting in her Lord and when the Master called here early yesterday morning a smile of relief spread over her gentle face and she entered into that rest that remaineth for the people of God. The final summons came Friday morning at 4:30 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. L. H. Young, where the funeral was held Saturday afternoon with burial at Liberty Center. “Smooth the locks of silver hair on our mother’s brow with tenderest care, gather the robe in final fold around the form so still and cold; lay on her bosom, pure as snow, the fairest, sweetest flowers that grow. Kiss her and leave her our hearts delight; her pain is over, she sleeps tonight.”
Card of Thanks – We wish to thank the many friends and neighbors for their kindness and sympathy in the hour of our bereavement. Mr. and Mrs. L. H. Young and family
