James Gilbert
(March 10, 1825 - Sep 25, 1907)

James Gilbert was born at Handley, Staffordshire Potteries, England on March 10, 1825, and died at his home in Milo, Iowa Sept 25, 1907, at the age of 82 years, 6 months and 15 days. He began life for himself at the early age of seven years. When twelve years old he was converted and immediately united with the Methodist church. On February 22, 1842, Mr. Gilbert was married to Miss Ellen Ashbury of his native town. To this union there were born thirteen children, five of whom are still living. On the third of April 1849, Mr. Gilbert together with his family emigrated to the United States, arriving in New York on the third of May. They immediately moved west and settled in Logan county, Ohio, where they became members of the Methodist church of that place and continued in its communion until its disorganization several years later, when he cast his lot with what was then known as the School Presbyterians.
In 1860 he moved with his family to Missouri, remaining in that state but one year. In February of 1861 he landed in Warren county, Iowa, where he made his home the remainder of his life. Mrs. Gilbert died on December 29, 1890, having lived twenty-nine years in the state of her adoption.
On the 23rd of May, 1894, Mr. Gilbert married his second wife, Mrs. Sarissa E. Creighton,of Hartford, Ia. For one year and six months they lived in Hartford, and in the fall of ’95 moved to Milo, where they have resided ever since. In 1896 he was elected Elder of the Presbyterian church, the duties of which office he discharged with diligence and loyalty. His church was dear to him and nothing but sickness prevented him from being present at all religious services. He was a devout Christian, universally loved and honored for his own sake. His death will be keenly felt by the church to which he belonged, and he will be mourned by the town and immediate country, as well as by his numerous relatives and friends.
