William A. (Bill) Todd Sr., 80, passed away Friday November 20, 2009, at his home in rural Warren County, surrounded by his family.
Bill was born at home in rural Mahaska County on October 3, 1929, the son of Ross N. and Hazel (Archer) Todd. Upon high school graduation he served in the Iowa National Guard. His love of all things automotive lead him to a career as a mechanic and later as a machinist. He was employed by several garages before opening his own business in the late 1950's. First as Todd's Transmission Service and later Todd's Custom Speed and Machine. His passion was car racing, first as a driver until the early 70's, then as a sprint car owner for many years and the last few years as a vintage stock car owner. Bill also found time to pursue his hobbies of hunting, fishing, mushroom hunting, camping, boating, motorcycles and snowmobiling.
He married Mavis Doud and to that union his two children were born, they later divorced. He then married Carolyn Douglas and helped raise her three children, they later divorced. His last years were spent with his companion Bonnie Todd.
Bill is survived by his loving companion Bonnie Todd; his daughter, Marlene Herny of Oskaloosa; his son, William Todd Jr. of Indianola; grandchildren, Joseph York of Sparta, MO, Brett Herny of Oskaloosa, Rebecca Wilson of Bloomfield, Jessica King of Pleasantville and Joe Todd of Indianola; his great-grandchildren, Mackenzie, Rylea, Blake, Kara and Wesley; one brother, Gerald (Phyllis) Todd of North Las Vegas, Nevada; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death are his parents; three brothers, Glen Todd, Ross (Junior) Todd and Charles Todd; three sisters, Dorothy Sampson, Mary Anderson and Lois Landers.
Memorials may be made to Mercy Hospice. Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial visitation Wednesday, December 2, 2009 at Peterson Funeral Home, 602 E. Salem, Indianola, IA from 5 to 7 p.m. and a memorial service at 11 a.m. on Thursday, December 3, 2009, also at the funeral home.
