Obituary from The Des Moines Register newspaper, Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa, USA on 8-1-2001:

Helen Bates, 92, of Lacona died of a heart attack Sunday at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. today at Lacona United Methodist Church in Lacona, of which she was a member. Burial will be at Cochran Cemetery near there.

Mrs. Bates was born in Lacona and had lived in Mitchellville and Runnells before returning to Lacona in 1952. She was a retired farm wife and a member of Rebekah Lodge and Order of the Eastern Star. She was a former Sunday school superintendent and had taught Sunday school and Bible school.

She is survived by a son, Daryl Stokesbury Bates of Miami, Okla.; a daughter, Lila Lea Hughes-Thompson of Lacona; six grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, A.W.

Memorial contributions may be made to her church. Mosher Funeral Home in Lacona is handling arrangements.
