Obituary from The Des Moines Register newspaper, Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa, USA on 8-22-2004:

Wayne Stierwalt, 92, died Wednesday, August 18, 2004 at Lucas County Health Center. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, August 23 at Fielding Funeral Home, with Pastor Paul Olson officiating. Interment will be in the Chariton Cemetery. His six grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.

Wayne was born on August 23, 1911 near Newbern in Lucas County, the first born son of John and Maggie (Shounkwiler) Stierwalt. Wayne attended rural schools in Lucas County. Wayne Stierwalt was united in marriage on May 19, 1929, to Lula Nickelson who preceded him in death April 18, 1989. On June 14, 1990 he married Hazel Harding.

Wayne farmed for many years in Lucas and Marion counties and was a welder in Longmont, CO, and at Johnson Machine Works in Chariton. After his retirement from farming, he enjoyed acquiring antiques and refinishing old furniture. He enjoyed family get-togethers, leisurely rides in the country and his family history. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Chariton.

Along with his first wife, Lula, Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, John and Maggie Stierwalt; son, Berns Stierwalt; brother, Lyle Stierwalt; and grandson, Kirby Berns Stierwalt.

Wayne is survived by his wife, Hazel; daughter, Norma (Claude) Hoch; daughter-in-law, Mary Stierwalt, all of Chariton; and six grandchildren, Dr. Doug (Martha) Hoch, Steve (Cindy) Hoch, Dwight (Connie) Hoch, Sheila Hoch, Kirk (Juli) Stierwalt and Kyle (Julie) Stierwalt.

Also left to mourn are Hazel's children, Nancy (Lynn) Johnston and Jim Harding; 13 great-grandchildren, Tiffany, Angela, Stacey, Laurie, Nicholas, Danielle and Jacob Hoch, Jordan, Harrison, Ky and Kyra Stierwalt, Marissa and Gil Hols, Matt Bryant and Jennifer Spielbauer; and great-great-granddaughters, Taylor Shinn, Bailey Bryant, Emmy and Lauren Coder and Sydney Spielbauer.

Wayne is also survived by his brother, Ronald (Lucille) Stierwalt and many nieces and nephews.
