Anna Jean (A.J.) Breuklander, 82, of Indianola, died on Wednesday, September 29, 2010.
Funeral Services for Anna Jean will be Saturday, October 2, 2010, at 1:30 p.m. at Peterson Funeral Home in Indianola. Visitation will be Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Peterson Funeral Home. Burial will be in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Indianola. She was born to Sam and Ruth Shupe, February 24, 1928, in Lacona, Iowa. A.J. graduated from Indianola High School in 1945 and attended Drake University for one year. She married Harry (Dutch) Breuklander, Jr. on March 20, 1947. They were life-long residents of Indianola. After her high school graduation, A.J. was Secretary to Rear Adm. Griffin Commandant, 13th Naval District in Seattle, Washington. She returned to Iowa in 1946 and worked at the Des Moines Register, Indianola Record and Herald, and various insurance offices before beginning her career as a secretary at Simpson College. A.J. worked at Simpson from 1962 until her retirement in 1996. Her glory days were spent in the Athletic Office. A.J. was a member of Trinity United Presbyterian Church but enjoyed the fellowship and teaching at the United Methodist Church and The Chapel of Faith. She enjoyed watching any sporting event, especially at Simpson College or if her children or grandchildren were involved. Her greatest joy was her family.
She is survived by her sons: Paul (Arlys) of Indianola and Gary of Evansville, Indiana, and daughters: Lee Ann Peck of Corydon and Lisa Pulis (Ed) of Webster City. She also loved to brag about her 17 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Her sister and brother- in-law, Kathy and John Mahlstadt of Indianola; her brother- in-law, Sam (Sue) Breuklander of Long Beach, California; and sister-in-law, Betty Hull of Indianola, also survive her. She is preceded in death by her husband, Dutch; her parents, Sam and Ruth Shupe; brother, Bill Shupe; sister and brother-in-law, Carrolld and Kenny Moses; and son-in-law, Grady Peck. Memorials can be directed to the Simpson College Athletic Department in A.J.’s memory.
