Larry Dale Shetterly, 76, formerly of Carlisle, passed away September 5, 2012. A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, September 9, 2012 from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. at the Community United Presbyterian Church in Hartford. Memorials may be made in care of Larry's family.
Larry was born November 24, 1935 in New Sharon, Iowa to Myron and Bernice (Huffman) Shetterly. He graduated from Hartford High School in 1954 and also attended school in Alaska for a couple of years while his father worked on the pipeline.
Larry courted Jeanette Prall at the ice cream parlor in Carlisle and they were married on June 25, 1954. They were blessed with five children: Jeani, Terry, Joni, Jim, and Juleen.
He worked for Iowa Power as a mechanic and supervisor from 1954 until 1990 and retired because of heart problems. He enjoyed working on cars, going to Sprint Car Races, often turning the races into family vacations all over the country. He was dedicated to his family, hardworking, and many will remember it was his way or the highway. In later years he also enjoyed a little fun at the casino.
Larry passed away September 5, 2012 at the age of 76 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. He was preceded in death by his parents; infant brother, George; granddaughter, Hannah Hupke; and a sister Linda Clarke.
Larry is survived by his wife of 58 years, Jeanette of Indianola; children: Jeani (Tom) Smith of Hartford, Terry Shetterly of Des Moines, Joni (Bruce) Hupke of Carlisle, Jim Shetterly of Colorado Springs, and Juleen Shetterly of Tucson; 9 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren. Also surviving are siblings: Jim Shetterly, Catherine Isley, Mary Purdy, Barb Cox, Bob Shetterly, and Kelly Jo Dunn.
