Elvin Edward "Elrod" Schurman, 56, of Lacona died of cancer Thursday at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lacona, with burial at the church cemetery.

Mr. Schurman was born near Lacona and lived in the area all his life. He had been a welder and a blacksmith.

Survivors include his wife, Kay; a son, Eddie of Lacona; his father, Ed of Lacona; six brothers, Wayne and Dennis, both of Lacona, Bernard, Loren and Richard, all of Des Moines, and Lyle of Phoenix, Ariz.; and a sister, Marlene Harper of Phoenix.

Friends may call after 3 p.m. today at Mosher Funeral Home in Lacona, where a vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Lacona Library.
