Obituary from The Des Moines Register newspaper, Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa, USA on 1-20-2004:

Vern Clair Schroeder, 89, died Sunday, January 18, 2004 at Wesley Acres in Des Moines. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 21, 2004 at Dunn's Funeral Home.

Vern was born in Milo, Iowa and lived in Des Moines all his life. He graduated from Kemper Military Academy in Booneville, Missouri and attended Drake University. Vern owned and operated Schroeder's Hardware and Dry Goods Store at 24th and University in Des Moines and was also in the optical business for many years.

Vern served in the Army during WWll where he was in charge of the Post Exchanges and Special Services at Edgewood Arsenal, Maryland.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Frances McGlothlen Schroeder.

Vern is survived by his daughter, Sandra Dustin of Des Moines; son, Phillip Schroeder of Ballwin, Missouri; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, January 20, 2004 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Wesley Acres Good Samaritan Fund or Hospice of Central Iowa.
