Donald was born November 5, 1930 in Lacona to Stephen F. and Bertha A. (Siefert) Schaefer. He married Lila Hamilton on December 22, 1951 at the St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Des Moines. He then enlisted in the Army in 1951 serving in the Korean War until 1953. He graduated from Northwestern University with a Bachelor’s of Science degree. Donald and Lila lived in Chicago, IL for thirty years, then moved to Houston, TX for five years, and then retiring and moving to Milo.

Donald enjoyed driving the school bus for SE Warren and was involved with the Boy Scouts, was a member of the Lions Club, and the American Legion for over 50 years. He enjoyed fishing, bowling, and playing bingo. After retiring he became very involved in his community, volunteering for different projects, helping with the Bingo at the 4th of July, and the breakfasts at the American Legion.

Donald passed away on January 21, 2009 after a short stay at the Knoxville Area Community Hospital with his wife Lila by his side after a lengthy battle of cancer.

He is survived by his wife Lila Hamilton Schaefer, sons: Benjamin (Ruby) of Grand Rapids, MI, Warren of Cedar Rapids, IA, and David (Janelle) of Norwalk, IA; six grandchildren: Ben, Hannah, Cami, Emma, Abby, and Weston; three brothers: Firman of Lacona, David of Virginia Beach VA, and Gerold of Des Moines, IA.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Stephen and Bertha; two brothers, Edward and Vincent; and one sister, Bernice.
