Lois Verlee Fetters
(August 15, 1914 - November 25, 2007)

Obituary from The Des Moines Register newspaper, Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa, USA on 11-27-2007:

Lois was born August 15, 1914 to Ben and Edna King on a farm ten miles south of Indianola, Iowa. She went to be with Jesus on November 25, 2007.

Visitation will be held 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Peterson Funeral Home in Carlisle. Her funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Peterson Funeral Home in Carlisle.

Lois was the eldest of seven children. She helped her parents on the farm while growing up and often talked about harnessing the horses and driving them two and four at a time on the wagon, disc, harrow, or corn plow all summer long.

Lois secretly eloped with Dwain Fetters on her eighteeth birthday to Bethany, Missouri. Their marriage license appeared in the newspaper three days later and the secret was out. Six children were born to this union, which lasted almost 56 years until Dwaine passed away in 1988.

Lois and Dwaine farmed for 25 years before moving to Carlisle in 1957. Lois was then employed at Farmer's Casualty Insurance in Des Moines until her retirement in 1979.

She loved her grandchildren. For many years she took each one on a special outing for their birthday.

Lois was a great cook, known for her fried chicken, potato salad, and black raspberry dessert, which were her regular fare for family reunions and July Fourth picnics.

Lois enjoyed her flower gardens, genealogy, and painting. She painted pictures for each of her children and grandchildren. She gave painting lessons and also painted saw blades for family and friends.

Lois was a member of the Carlisle Christian Church for 46 years, serving as a Sunday School teacher, board member, and sang in the church choir.

Survivors include her three sons, Darrell (Ruth), Dwight (Karla), of Carlisle, Doran (Kathy) of Des Moines and daughter-in-law Sue of Carlisle; fifteen grandchildren, twenty five great-grandchildren, twelve great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Vera Cope of Carlisle, Nadine Johnson of Lawrence, Kansas and brother, Harlan King of Mount Ayr.

Preceding her in death were her parents, husband Dwaine, sons Dennis and Dean, daughter, Donna, great-granddaughter, Alex, great-great-grandson, Creighton, sister, Florence, and brothers Earl and Dale.

Memorials may be directed to the Carlisle Christian Church.
