Maggie Keller Spear, daughter of Jacob and Matilda Keller, was born Jan. 14, 1872, at Passridge, Ill., and died Nov. 23, 1971, just short of her 100th birthday, at the Jefferson Home, Indianola, Ia.

At the age of four, she moved with her family by train to Chariton, they by wagon to the farm two miles northeast of Liberty Center. In 1880 the father bought 80 acres of virgin soil and built his home to be near the Green Plain school and church, where she was a member for 82 years.

At the age of 18 years she obtained a teachers certificate by written examination and taught in the rural schools until her marriage to F. Byron Spear, Nov. 23, 1898 in the family home.

Three children were born of this marriage, Frank Byron of Lacona, Marguerita Aline, now of Indianola, and Cyril Duane Spear of Indianola.

In 1909 they moved to a farm near Lacona. Her husband died May 22, 1939. She remained on the farm with her daughter until Christmas Day, 1970.

She was the last of a family of 14 children, and is survived by the three children, six grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. One grandson, Donald Elton Spear, preceded her in death in 1939.

Funeral services for Mrs Maggie Keller Spear were held Friday afternoon, Nov. 26, at the Mosher Funeral Home in Milo with interment at Goode's Chapel Cemetery.
Mrs. Spear died at the Jefferson Home Nov. 23, only a few weeks short of her 100th birthday, which would have been Jan. 14, 1972.
Born at Passridge, Ill., she came by train and wagon to a farm near Liberty Center when she was 4 years old. She was a rural school teacher until her marriage to F. Byron Spear, who preceded her in death in May, 1939.
Mrs. Spear continued to live with her daughter, Marguerita, on a farm near Lacona until Christmas Day 1970, when she entered the Jefferson Home.
She is survived by three children, Frank B. Spear of Lacona, Miss Marguerita Spear and Cyril D. Spear of Indianola; six grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. She was the last of a family of 14 children.
