Obituary of Edward Hickman (1809-1905)
The death of Edward Hickman, which occurred at the home of his son, Charles Hickman, August 19, removed one of the oldest citizens of this vicinity.
Deceased was born in Berringham, England, June 12, 1809. He grew up there and married Miss June Fairclough July 13, 1831. They came to America in 1848 and settle near Philadelphia. In 1868 they removed with their family to Iowa and settle near this city. To this union were born nine children, six of whom are still living. His wife died December 29, 1887. Edward Hickman united with the Methodist church at Farmers in 1872. In April 1878, he was received by letter into the first Methodist church during the partorate of Reverend T.S. Berry.
The funeral services were held in the First Methodist Evangelical church on Monday at 10 a.m. and were conducted by the pastor, Rev G.W.L. Brown, assisted by Dr. W.C. Martin who made a most fitting and appropriate address, he having twice been the pastor of the deceased.
Edward Hickman was ninety six years, two months and seven days old. Since the death of his wife he has made his home among his children ans was given every care. He was a good citizen and a devoted christian during his long and successful life and now rests from labor.
