Virginia O. Weaklend, 87, beloved mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, was taken home to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, March 26, 2009. She passed away at Good Samaritan in Indianola, surrounded by her family after enduring a courageous struggle with Alzheimer's Disease.
She was born in Milo on February 5, 1922, to Opal and Virgil Feight and was united in marriage with Melvyn E. Weaklend ("Jack") on October 13, 1940. While Jack was stationed in the South Pacific during World War II, Virginia resided in California and worked in a factory manufacturing B-17 bombers. In 1949, they welcomed their beloved son, Gregory.
Virginia was a strong woman with a loving and generous heart. She had a lifelong love for reading and education. She taught in one-room schools in rural Warren County for many years. She graduated from Drake University in 1963 with a degree in Education and was an elementary school teacher in the Des Moines Public Schools for more than twenty years.
She was preceded in death by her husband Jack; her parents; and her sister, Verna Corcoran. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Gregory and Charlotte Weaklend, of Milo; her grandchildren, Alicia Martsching, of Indianola and Angela Morales (Vic), of Johnston; her great-grandchildren, Hannah and Drew Martsching, Benjamin DeJoode, and Isabel and Gabriel Morales; and her siblings Erma Smith, John Feight, and James Feight, of the Chicago area.
