Mary E. Nine, New Virginia, was born Oct. 19, 1882, in Leon and died Oct. 18, one day prior to her 101 st birthday.

Her death came while she was a patient in the Clarke County Hospital. Mrs. Nine was the daughter of Jacob Hadley Andrew and Jennie White Andrew. She was one of 10 children.

After graduating from Chariton High School, she taught in rural schools for two years in Lucas County. On Nov. 26, 1902, she married Jacob Charles Nine in Chariton and they had four children: son Raymond Nine of New Virginia and three daughters, Inez Runyan and husband Charles of Milo, Lucille Hilton of New Virginia and Margorie Harris and husband Leroy of Fairfield.

Mrs. Nine was a member of the New Virginia United Methodist Church and a worker in the former "Ladies Aid Society." She was also a past president of the Womens Relief Corp., the Bay View Club and the Friendly Garden Club.

For several years, she served as the mistress of ceremonies for the annual "Old Settlers Reunion" in new Virginia. She and her husband had farmed in the New Virginia area for most of their married life until he retired. Mr. Nine died Oct. 9, 1962. Mrs. Nine also was preceded in death by her parents, six sisters, three brothers, one son-in-law, Paul Hilton, one daughter-in-law, Lela Nine, and one granddaughter, Mary Alice Adams.

She is survived by her son and daughters as well as 10 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and 20 great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Oct. 21 in the United Methodist Church in New Virginia, with the Rev. Steve Clinton and Pastor James Patrick officiating. Burial was in the New Virginia Cemetery. Kale Funeral Home was in charge of services.
