Virgil Joseph Schurman, 83, of Lacona died of a heart attack Thursday at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Rosemont Catholic Church near Lacona, of which he was a member. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Mr. Schurman had lived in Lacona all his life. He was a retired farmer and enjoyed woodworking, rug making and square dancing.

He is survived by his wife, Catherine; four daughters, Darlene Spaulding of Knoxville, Gladys Spaulding of Des Moines, Agnes Flinn of Rochester, N.Y., and Cindy Burgin of Lacona; two sons, Larry of Knoxville and Frank of Lacona; three step-daughters, Judy Garrett of Knoxville, Marge Williams of Lacona and Barb Hanna of Winterset; four stepsons, Jerry Putz, Ed Putz and Bob Putz, all of Lacona, and Tony Putz of Indianola; three sisters, Bertha Wadle of Longmont, Colo., and Margaret Dittmer and Geneva Gass, both of Lacona; a brother, Vitus of Lacona; 20 grandchildren; 19 step-grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Grace.

Friends may call after 11 a.m. today at Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Lacona. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7:30 p.m. today at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lacona, where a vigil service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Virgil J. Schurman Memorial Fund at Peoples Bank in Lacona.
