Obituary from The Des Moines Register newspaper, Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa, USA on 12-21-1988:

John S. "Blackie" Blackford Sr., 85, of 302 S.E. Titus Ave. died of pneumonia Sunday at Iowa Lutheran Hospital. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. today in Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Mr. Blackford was born in Norwalk and lived in Des Moines for 48 years. He was a retired pipe layer for Ted Cutler Plumbing Co. and was a member of the Pipe Layers Union and Moose Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy; four daughters, Colleen Frey, Dorothy Haines and Jean Baker, all of Des Moines, and Sharon Myers of Wichita, Kan.; three sons, Richard, John Jr. and Paul, two sisters, Ethel Davis and Marie Longcor, and a half-brother, Roy, all of Des Moines; 19 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
