Edmund Yates, Oldest Member of Company A, Dies in Indianola
Edmund Yates, one of the oldest members of Company A, died at his home at Indianola, November 29. Mr. Yates was a Spanish war veteran. He was with the boys on the Mexican border after which his time expired. He re-enlisted at the out-break of the world war and was with Company A in all of its battles. He never recovered from the effects of gas and was sent home prior to the company. Upon his arrival “in” this county he was in a southern hospital for several months. Here his condition improved little and because of his plea of home-sickness he was allowed to go home.
Although his parents were dead, “Ed” as he was popularly called, had kept Indianola his home and was loved by all who knew him. Not being physically able to work, he spent much of his time in making toys for the youngsters. Last winter he made kites for them and when “Kite Day” was announced the kiddies swarmed to his room to receive one of “Uncle Ed’s” kites. He loved the children as much as they loved him.
Mr. Yates was laid away this morning the funeral being military. His comrades who went from Winterset to pay their last respects were Raymond Brock, Lynn Vance, Robert Hills, Orra Adams, Lee Simons, Tom Rowe, Rego Gaekle, William Case, Glenn McKibben, George Croft and Dale Bond.
His sister, Mrs. May Lighbody, of Galesford, Illinois, and Charles Yates of this city, are the only relatives.
