LOYD HOLDEN VANPATTEN
Loyd Van Patten, assistant secretary of agriculture of Iowa, was born on a farm eight miles east of New Virginia Feb. 19, 1897, the son of George M. and Annie (Holden) Van Patten. After Mr.Van Patten had received his early education in the rural schools, he attended high school at New Virginia, and completed a two-year course in agriculture at Iowa State college at Ames.
Dec. 25, 1918, Mr. Van Patten married Mabel O. Lynn, who passed away Dec. 8, 1919. Eldon Lynn, a son, was born to this marriage Dec. 8, 1919. April 27, 1921, Mr. Van Patten married Ethel May Henry, daughter of Edward Everett and Anna (Hossack) Henry. Mrs. Van Patten was born at New Virginia, R.F.D., Aug. 18, 1897. Children of this marriage are Donald Duane, born May 14, 1923, and Barbara Jean, born Oct. 19, 1928.
During World War I Mr. Van Patten served in Company E, 19th division. In 1937 he moved from the farm to Indianola, but still owns a 592-acre farm in Squaw Township. He is a past secretary of the National Farm Loan association and a past commander of the American Legion. He represented the llth senatorial district of Iowa in the 53rd and 54th general assemblies. April 23, 1951, he was appointed assistant secretary of agriculture of Iowa. Fraternally Mr. Van Patten is affiliated with the Masons, holding the thirty-second degree in the Masonic order. He is a member of the American Legion and Lions club. Mrs. Van Patten is a member of the Order of Eastern Star. The Van Pattens are Methodists; their political affiliation is with the Republican Party. Mr. and Mrs. Van Patten live at 807 East Salem, Indianola.
